Heel Toe Limb Independence

These exercises are intended to help you develop heel toe limb independence. It’s one thing to roll your way through a blast beat. It’s quite another to have full control over switching back and forth between standard heels up playing and using the heel toe method. These exercises are designed to ensure that you switch your playing style up within each measure. For an easier warm up exercise, check out my Heel Toe Method lesson. We’ll start off easy with this pattern. The first measure focuses on a right foot heel toe, while the left plays standard heels up or down. The second measure switches to left foot heel toe.


This pattern starts getting a little trickier, but for the most part, it’s pretty straight forward.


When you are playing these beats, be sure to take your time and do them slowly to make sure you are hitting your heel toe at the right time.


This exercise only uses the heel toe method four times, switching back and forth between R and L, but can be harder to play at the correct time.


Whereas the last exercise focused on switching from standard playing to heel toe, this one will force you to come out of your heel toe playing in order to hit single beats.
