Rudiments 1-3

Here are a few of the rudimental drum lessons that I found online. While they do not explain what exactly is going on, they do demonstrate how to play them and how they should sound. When learning rudiments, it is important that you start slow and work your speed up eventually over time. Most of the videos demonstrate a slow speed which is great for learning and then increase the speed up to a playable level.

This is a single stroke roll. Each stick hits the practice pad only one time. Do not allow the stick to bounce in your hand. You can see this plainly at a slow speed. Alternate your hits R,L,R,L,R,L,R,L.

This is the single stroke four. Again each stick hits the practice pad once only. Alternate each hand R,L,R,L the first three notes are played like a triplet.

The third rudiment is the single paradiddle. Move your hands R,L,R,R then L,R,L,L. Be sure to accent the first hit of each paradiddle. You may want to count outloud, 1 E & A 2 E & A. I was taught to count them by saying the rudiment, PAR-A-DID-ILL. You may prefer not to count at all. Use what works best for you.

If you learn better through written materials or would like to explore rudiments on a more in-depth level, you can find great books at sheetmusicplus. There are rudiment lesson books and exercises to help you develop your skills.

Here are a few examples of the books you can find online at sheetmusicplus. Clicking the picture takes you to a page where you can look inside and see a couple of the pages and read reviews of people who have purchased the book.
