The single stroke roll is the first drum rudiment that you should master. It’s pretty straight forward and seems easy enough, but it can be one of the harder ones to play. You simply use a RLRL…pattern to play, but the hard part comes in making sure that you don’t play a multiple bounce (buzz) roll or accidentally play a double stroke roll. Start slow, alternating your right and left hands and gradually build up speed.
