Cheap Drum Sets

Cheap drum sets can still sound good. With a little drum tuning, new heads and hardware and a few muting drum tricks, even the worst drum sets can sound brand new. Below, I’ll show you a few things you can do to get your drumset sounding good and offer you a few places to check out if you are looking to purchase a cheap kit. Drumming can be one of the most expensive musical hobbies, but it doesn’t have to be. You can find a cheap set in many places.

Pretty much everybody knows that you can find great deals on just about anything from websites like ebay or craigslist, but I’m always skeptical about buying cheap drum sets from some online stranger. The used gear on reputable sites like Guitar Center is checked out by their professionals and often comes with some type of return option if you’re not satisfied. Being a drummer is an expensive hobby, so you owe it to yourself to check out all your options to find the best price. One way to cut cost is to purchase a drum set with cymbals included. These introductory sets usually come with everything you need to play right out of the box. This includes pedals, throne, hardware, sticks and most importantly, cymbals.

Cymbals are probably where most of your expense as a drummer will come from. The cymbals that come with these cheap sets are not of high quality, but it’s enough to get you started and to let you see if drumming is something you plan on pursuing further. Once you’ve been playing for awhile, you’ll be better able to choose higher quality cymbals that can grow with you.

Making Cheap Drum Sets Sound Good

So how do you make a pawn shop special sound good? It takes a little time and effort, but the payoff is great and can completely change the sound of your drums. The first thing you will want to do is change the drum heads. The stock drumheads that come with cheap sets are horrible. In drumming, the largest factor in your sound is going to be the type of drum heads that you use. I’ve laid out a few more important factors that influence sound in my lessons on Drum Shells. You might want to browse through it to get a solid overview of how tiny changes can influence your sound.

Once you’ve changed your heads, you’re going to want to tune the drums. A drumset that is in tune can do wonders for your sound. It seems like such a simple thing, but drum tuning can be quite a frustrating process. See my lessons on How To Tune Drums for step by step instructions on tuning.

Once, you’ve tuned your drumset, it’s time to consider muffling options. Generally, you want your drums to ring somewhat, but if it’s overpowering your sound or you want a tighter sound, you are going to need to dampen the sound using one of many muffling options. I cover a few of your options and show you how to make your own muffle in this lesson on Drum Rings.

Where to search for cheap sets depends on what you are looking for. Pawn shops can be a great place for general items such as cymbals, individual drums, stands and sets. If you are looking for more specific items such as hardware, drum racks or bass drum pedals, you’ll probably want to try one of the online store’s clearance sections. These places also usually offer 6, 12, or 18 months same as cash. It’s the only way I buy any of my gear anymore, because spreading out that two thousand dollar drumset over 18 months hurts a lot less than paying it all at once.
