The original South Indian instruments were made of the now endangered Monitor lizard’s skin. Remo uses their Skyndeep drumheads with a lizard graphic as a tribute to the originals. The original shells were quite wearisome to play. But, through technological advances in production they are now more user friendly.
They are played similar to frame drums that require the drummer to bend the pitch by controlling head tension from underneath the drum.
