African Drum
When someone refers to an African drum, they could be talking about any one of many different
Types of Drums covering a wide array of various percussion instruments whose origins lay in tribal regions of Africa.
The most popular of these instruments would probably be the
Djembe and Talking Drum. Traditionally, these are made out of solid, hollowed-out pieces of wood. However, with their recent popularity, companies have began producing plastic and fiberglass models which are much more durable than their wooden counterparts.
In the west, they are often found in drum-circles. And, although they may not resemble the wooden shells and
Rope Tuned Djembes of the African-made models, they are still used for many of the same reasons.
Whether they are played in the West or in Western Africa, they are used to create a fast, upbeat rhythm for the entertainment of the community. But in Africa, they are used for much more than music and dancing. They are often used to communicate amongst members of the tribe or to help direct daily routines.
