Evans Drum Heads

Evans drum heads have been in production for over forty years. The first were usually made of various animal skins. In 1956 they began producing “skins” out of synthetic materials(plastic/polyester). Although animal skins are not used anymore (except for world percussion)they are still often referred to as “skins”.

If you are looking to purchase new drum heads for your kit, it is important to know what type you are looking for. There are two basic categories: batter and resonant.

Evans Batter Drum Heads

The batter head is the one that you will hit. There are many different options available for Evans batters. Coatings, finishes and dotted centers all change the sound and attack of the instrument.

Evans Resonant Drum Heads

The resonant drum heads are the ones found on the bottom (front for bass) of the shells. They control overtones and provide increased or decreased tone depending on their construction.

Clear coats usually increase the sustain of the instrument and create a brighter tone. A resonant bass head can be customized with logos, colors or artwork to create a unique look for your set. You might be interested in this short lesson on how to make your own Custom Bass Drum Head.
