drum stick tape
Drum stick tape is a quick fix that will improve your grip. If you seem to be dropping a lot of sticks there could be a few things going on.

First off, you may just be holding the sticks wrong. Be sure to check out the lesson on how to hold drum sticks to make sure you’re using proper technique.

Another mistake that beginner drummers make is holding the sticks to tight. It seems that if you hold them tight, you wouldn’t drop them right? Well, when you tense up you’re more likely to fatigue quicker and over time, the shock that you should be able to normally absorb can overpower you and you can drop drum sticks easily.

The tenser you are, the more likely you are to make mistakes. Misplaced hits can knock a stick right out of your hand. So loosen up a little.

Sometimes, it’s not your fault. Drummers get sweaty. Let’s face it, we do our work using all of our limbs while the guitarists just stand around flapping their hands over some strings or whatever they do.

No matter the cause, you may want to consider either tape or wax. If you are just learning to play and keep having this problem (dropping things)don’t worry. It can take time to find that perfect grip that is somewhere between too loose and too tight. Keep Trying!

Below are a few different tape and wax options for your consideration. The drum tape works great for making playing more comfortable. Tape is supposed to help control blistering that comes from extended practice.

It also helps give you a firm grip. The wax works pretty much the same way. I’ve never used it personally, but I’ve heard good things about it. It’s also heat activated, so you don’t have to reapply it every single time you play.
