Learn To Play the Drums

Contents

The Gravity Blast technique will help you learn to play the drums much faster. You can improve your speed drastically using this method. Sometimes called a rim roll or a one handed roll, it simply uses the rim of your drums as a fulcrum point to play an extra note. Learn the steps below and watch the video for more information.

Before you begin, there are multiple ways to hold the drumsticks to perform this technique. It doesn’t matter which one you learn. It basically just depends on which feels more natural when you play. I prefer to play by holding the stick between the thumb and index finger only. I’ve also tried using the thumb and three fingers, but it just didn’t feel right. You can learn both ways as demonstrated in the video below.

As you strike the drum in the center, continue moving your arm all the way down past the rim of the drums shell.

Use the rim of the drum as a fulcrum point to launch the stick back up into the air.

Maintain contact with the rim as you bring your hand back up and you will play a second note. It’s pretty easy once you get the movement down, but controlling it and making each note sound even is a little harder.

With practice and speed you can learn how to play one handed snare rolls. It’s also a great method to use for blast beat drums or throwing in simple double stroke accents in the middle of a beat. Learn it, play around with it, and if you have any ideas, or would like to post your own gravity blast drums video, you can do so in the drums forum.
